Finding Time for Self-Care as a Twin Parent

Being a parent to twins can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life, but it can also be challenging and time-consuming. With two little ones to care for, it can be difficult to find time for yourself. However, self-care is essential to your overall well-being and is crucial for being the best parent you can be. Here are some tips for finding time for self-care as a twin parent:

  1. Schedule self-care time: One of the best ways to make sure you have time for self-care is to schedule it into your day. Whether it's waking up 30 minutes early to do yoga, taking a relaxing bath at night, or scheduling a date night with your partner, make sure to prioritise self-care in your daily routine.

  2. Find a support system: As a twin parent, it's important to have a support system that you can rely on. Whether it's family, friends, or a support group, having people you can turn to for help or even just to talk to can be invaluable. If you haven't already then I highly recommend Twins Trust.

  3. Hire a babysitter: Hiring a babysitter for a few hours can give you the opportunity to do something for yourself, whether it's going to the gym, getting a massage, or simply running errands without the kids. We hired a nanny to help a few hours a week to allow myself time to rest. It wasn't expensive and she came to the house and just stepped in when I stepped out so it took away the stress of having to get the children ready to go out!

  4. Take advantage of nap time: When your twins are napping, take the opportunity to do something for yourself. Whether it's reading a book, taking a nap, or doing something creative, make the most of this time to recharge and relax. For me I sat and watched Games of Thrones! It was my little slice of me time each day.

  5. Be mindful: Even if you don't have a lot of time for self-care, taking just a few minutes a day to be mindful can make a big difference. Whether it's through meditation, deep breathing exercises, or simply taking a few moments to reflect on your day, mindfulness can help you feel more centered and focused.

  6. Let go of guilt: As a parent, it's easy to feel guilty for taking time for yourself, but it's important to remember that self-care is not selfish. Taking care of yourself is essential to being the best parent you can be, and it's okay to prioritise your own needs. Once I learnt it was ok to leave the washing up until later or not put that load of washing on and just sit and watch tv my life became a little easier!

  7. Make self-care a family affair: Finally, remember that self-care doesn't have to be something you do alone. Get your whole family involved in self-care activities, whether it's taking a family walk, cooking a healthy meal together, or playing a game.

Finding time for self-care as a twin parent is essential to your overall well-being and happiness. By prioritising self-care, scheduling it into your day, and taking advantage of nap time and other opportunities, you can make sure that you are taking care of yourself so you can be the best parent you can be to your twins. :-)
